Ausbildung in Germany

Dual vocational training that combines classroom learning with on-the-job experience

What is Ausbildung?

Germany's unique dual education system for vocational training

Ausbildung, also known as dual vocational training, is Germany's unique education system that combines theoretical learning in vocational schools with practical training at companies. This system has been a cornerstone of Germany's economic success, ensuring a steady supply of highly skilled workers across various industries.

Ausbildung programs typically last between 2-3.5 years, depending on the profession. Trainees spend 1-2 days per week at vocational school learning theory, and the remaining days gaining hands-on experience at their training company.

One of the biggest advantages of Ausbildung is that trainees receive a monthly stipend throughout their training period, ranging from €800 to €1,200 depending on the industry and year of training.

Common Questions

Everything you need to know about pursuing opportunities in Germany

What are the language requirements for Ausbildung in Germany?

Most Ausbildung programs require at least B1 level German proficiency, though some technical programs may accept A2 level with commitment to reach B1 during training. Healthcare and customer-facing roles often require B2 or higher. We recommend starting German language studies early and aiming for B2 level to maximize your opportunities.

How long does the application process take?

The entire process typically takes 6-12 months from initial research to arrival in Germany. This includes language learning, document preparation, company applications, interview processes, visa application, and relocation planning. It's important to start early, as most programs begin in August or September each year.

Can I bring my family with me during Ausbildung?

Generally, family reunification during Ausbildung is challenging due to the modest stipend amount. However, after completing your training and securing a job that meets the minimum income requirements (currently €45,540 per year for a family of two), you can apply for family reunification. Some exceptions may apply for those in high-demand fields.

What are the costs involved in applying for Ausbildung?

Main costs include:

  • Language courses and exams: Rs. 150,000-200,000
  • Document translation and certification: Rs. 50,000-90,000
  • Visa application fee: €75 (approx. Rs. 23,000)

You will receive a residence permit for seeking employment valid for up to 12 months. Once employed, you can apply for a Blue Card or other work residence permit. After 2 years of working, you may be eligible for permanent residency.

Can I switch from Ausbildung to university studies?

Yes, it is possible to pursue university studies after completing your Ausbildung. Your vocational qualification may give you access to university studies in a related field, though specific requirements vary by state and university. Some universities may require additional qualifications or entrance exams. Many students choose to work for a few years after Ausbildung before pursuing higher education.

How difficult is it to find accommodation in Germany?

Finding accommodation in Germany can be challenging, especially in larger cities like Munich, Berlin, and Hamburg. It's important to start your search early. Many companies that offer Ausbildung will assist with finding accommodation, often providing dormitory-style housing or helping you find a shared apartment (WG). The cost varies significantly by location, from €300-400 per month in smaller towns to €600-800+ in major cities.

Is it possible to work part-time during Ausbildung?

Yes, it is possible to work part-time during Ausbildung, but there are restrictions. Non-EU students on a vocational training residence permit can work up to 10 hours per week in addition to their training. However, keep in mind that Ausbildung itself is a full-time commitment (35-40 hours per week including vocational school), so additional work may be challenging to manage.
